Stretch and Stay Fit

If you love everything about DDR and want to make sure you stay fit enough to keep it in your exercise rotation without having to fear the risk of injury, here are some tips to keep in mind with regard to the importance of stretching since your body will always perform better if you incorporate a series of stretches before undertaking any physical activity.

  • Consider stretching to be as important an element as training for strength, balance and power.
  • Proper alignment improves stretches and prevents injury consider practicing your stretches in front of a mirror until you know you have perfected alignment and can attain maximum benefit.
  • Always practice deep and consistent breathing while stretching. To hold your breath as you stretch is counterintuitive to achieving any benefit.
  • A tip for better breathing as you stretch includes inhaling through your nose while pulling air into your diaphragm not your chest and exhaling through your mouth. Pilates aficionados consistently use this technique to build core strength.

A Video Game Even the First Lady Endorses

It’s certainly up for debate whether the rapid, spastic foot movements of Dance Dance Revolution gamers are actually a form of dance, but one thing is sure, it gets the heart pumping. The Japanese video game is now over a decade old and still one of the best-known games on the market. The four-arrowed dance pad became such a sensation in video arcades that fans began running to the stores to bring this game to their living room. It’s something the whole family will enjoy, and many parents are more likely to allow their children to play this game for extended periods of time because it requires physical activity. Even President Obama’s kids get to play DDR, and Michelle Obama has suggested incorporating this game into schools to get kids active again. Though some scoff at the fact that kids today need a machine to make them get up and move, it’s better than nothing. (more…)
